Lazy French Onion Soup

Let's make it

Step 1
In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.
Step 2
Add the sliced onions and cook until they become soft and caramelized, about 25 minutes.
Step 3
Stir in 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Pour in 4 cups of beef broth and 1/2 cup of dry white wine (if using). Bring to a boil.
Step 4
Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for another 15 minutes.
Step 5
Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted baguette, and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
Step 6
Place the bowls on a baking sheet and broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden, about 3-5 minutes.
